You Light Up My Life: 5 Reasons Why Christians Are Called The ‘Children Of Light' And 'Of The Day'

"You are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness" (1 Thessalonians 5:5).

Why does the Holy Bible refer to Christians as “children of the light and the children of the day?” I’ll give you five good reasons:

[1] Jesus Christ is the Light of the World

“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world” -Jesus Christ (John 9:5).

To whosoever believes in Him, Jesus Christ, God our Father who referred to Himself as the "Light of the World." And He gave us the power to be the children of God:

"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." (John 1:12-13)

Thus, being sons and daughters of God, we can say that we are children of the Light.

[2] Jesus Said His Followers are the Light of the World

"Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid" (Matthew 5:14).

During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus spoke about the “light of the world.”

His disciples, and subsequent Christians are designed to bedazzle with a brightness bellowing from the Bubbling Brook, the Wellspring of Light, Christ Jesus.

The disciples helped give the world God’s moral standards, enlightenment, truth and wisdom in the midst of sin, self-corruption, darkness, depression, anxiety, fear, lies and ignorance.

They spread the Gospel of Almighty God Jesus Christ, despite being despised by the powers of darkness.

[3] Let There Be Light

On the first day of Creation, God the Father and Creator of us all, spoke the world’s illuminating light into existence. He also divided the light from darkness:

"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day." (Genesis 1:3)

In the Holy Bible, light and day are usually correlated to righteousness, wisdom, eternal life, truth and the Kingdom of Heaven.

When the Lord and Savior returns, He will dwell with His people in the heavenly Holy City and His glory, the shining Light of the World will shekhinah so much that there will be no need for the sun because there will be no night there. (Revelation 21)

Jesus and His followers speak and write about darkness as representing Satanism, spiritual wickedness in high places, plus lies, murder, evil, drunkenness, death and Hell (John 8:12; Ephesians 6:12).

[3] Christians are Enlightened by Jesus Christ

"For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness." (Psalms 18:28)

In contrast to living in gloom, fear, anxiousness, torment, distress, darkness and the ignorance of the devil, Christians are enlightened, floodlit and given extraordinary wisdom and understanding through the teachings of Jesus Christ, in the flesh, and by way of the Comforter, the Holy Spirit (Proverbs 28:5).

Found through the Holy Bible, the LORD’s wisdom and teachings are the most enlightening knowledge humans can get.

Having the power to become children of God, true Christians become wise to evil, expose it and are adept at avoiding wickedness.

You won’t find too many Christian gang members or murderers for example. You won’t see true Christians falling for the lies, fake news, signs and wonders that the wicked unleash on the unsuspecting world.

Too much wisdom from God for that.

[4] True Christians Give Light to Others

"Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house." (Matthew 5:15)

Instead of hiding our enlightenment, like esoteric societies such as Freemasons do, Christians graciously pass our knowledge on to anyone who desires to become illuminated.

Nothing Christ did was in secret.

And you will find that many true Christians openly confess that we are sinners saved by the Gospel of Jesus Christ who was crucified, dead, buried and rose again after three days like He said.

Through His teachings we can recognize a false prophet on first sight and sound, while those living under the power of darkness's spell might follow that false prophet to the gates of Hell.

Christians can alert people to the wicked chicanery of TV Evangelists for example: I mean those broadcasters who on the air preach "Prosperity Gospel" which is indeed "Another Gospel" that is not even a Gospel according to the Bible. (Galatians 1:6-7)

Christians don’t force Jesus on anyone.

We seek to help everyone come out of their sleep, slumber and darkness into the bright shining light of the knowledge of God, because we want as many people as possible to obtain salvation and eternal life, like us, through believing in the one true God Christ Jesus.

[5] Christians are a Shining and Visible Society that Glorifies God

"Let your light shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven." (Matthew 5:16)

God-glorifying Christians can often easily be seen and heard because we strive to live not only to do good works, but we live by faith and the love of God.

Christians often associate with both Christians and non-Christians like Jesus did. For the healthy are not in need of a physician. (Luke 5:31)

With the help of Almighty God, we feed the hungry, house the homeless, provide clothing, spiritual guidance, family counseling and financial assistance to those in need.

We help alcoholics and drug addicts turn their lives around. We help people find helpmates.

Wherever there are good works to be done, Christians will be there.

Not just do-gooders, we live by different moral standards from people who do not believe in Jesus. Christians dress modestly for example.

Summary

Christians are not called “Children of the Light” because of our glowing skin but because of our alertness, watchfulness and soberness of mind. The flame of our fire glows – being on fire for Jesus.

Having the power to be children of God, while walking in the light, you can see where you are going and can take the straight path to avoid danger or injury.

Christians know where we are going - straight to the kingdom of Heaven.

Walking in the rhythm of darkness, you do not really know where you are going and easily deviate from the straight path.

Like King Solomon says in Proverbs 4:19:

"The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble."

Living outside of the Light of the World, you will stub your toe or break your foot while walking in the darkness.

The Lord God Almighty, The Light of the World keeps the feet of his saints from succumbing to darkness (1 Samuel 2:9).

4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

4But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. 5Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 6Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. 7For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. 8But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 9For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, 10Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.
